Essential Workers on the Brink of Leaving Jobs to Afford Homes, New Survey Shows

By November 22, 2024December 9th, 2024No Comments

Over Half of Essential Workers Consider Career Changes as Housing Costs Continue to Rise.

In a recent survey of 3,000 essential workers, HOPE Housing has revealed a concerning trend: more than half (56%) of respondents are contemplating leaving their professions to pursue higher-paying jobs that would make homeownership attainable. The findings spotlight the significant impact of housing affordability on Australia’s essential workforce, as many struggle to balance their commitment to essential roles with the dream of homeownership.

The survey results also showed that 78% of essential workers feel their super funds should invest in more homeownership schemes, with 94% saying they would consider moving to a fund that does.

To address this pressing issue, HOPE Housing Fund Management Limited (HOPE), a for-purpose investment fund, offers a unique shared equity model that provides essential workers with up to 50% of the equity needed to purchase a home. This approach directly supports professionals such as teachers, nurses, police officers, and paramedics — those who are essential to the community but are increasingly priced out of the housing market in the areas they serve.

HOPE Housing: Making a Difference Today

Launched in 2022, HOPE is on a mission to provide immediate solutions to the housing challenges faced by essential workers. To date, the Fund Manager has raised $20 million from investors which has already helped 35 essential workers secure 23 homes.

“Essential workers are the backbone of our communities,” said Tim Buskens, CEO of HOPE Housing. “The current housing crisis shouldn’t force them to choose between their profession and homeownership. At HOPE, we’re already making a difference — enabling teachers, nurses, police officers, and others to live closer to work, enjoy shorter commutes, and stay in the jobs they love.”

By focusing on both social impact and positive financial returns, HOPE Housing demonstrates that addressing housing needs for essential workers doesn’t require sacrificing investment goals. With tangible results for both homeowners and investors, HOPE Housing is paving the way for a housing solution that works for all involved.

As the demand for affordable housing for essential workers continues to grow, HOPE Housing’s shared equity initiative stands out as a practical, results-driven solution that provides essential workers with a path to homeownership while offering a compelling opportunity for investors looking to make a meaningful impact.
