From Housing Stress to Community Strength: Eliza and Todd’s Journey with HOPE

Eliza, a dedicated nurse, and Todd, a passionate community pastor, were raising their young children amidst the constant pressure of housing uncertainty on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

With strong community ties, both personally and professionally, in the Northern Beaches, relocation was not an option but the rising house prices in their community made dreams of home ownership  increasingly unattainable – until they discovered HOPE Housing’s Shared Equity Program.

The Challenge: Limited Options and Ongoing Stress

Before securing their current home, Eliza and Todd rented a modest townhouse in Dee Why, with a  discounted “mates rate” from Eliza’s brother. However, with a growing family of five options within their budget created a constant sense of compromise, with limited spacing, unaffordable rent, or unrealistic travel times.

“Even with discounted rent, we couldn’t afford to save for a home we truly wanted for our children,” Eliza recalls. “We felt trapped, always making compromises.”

“Being part of this community isn’t just a job – it’s our life,” Todd explains. “Our work and relationships are deeply rooted here. Moving away would have felt like abandoning our calling.”

The Turning Point: Finding HOPE

Learning about HOPE Housing’s Shared Equity Program marked a significant turning point. Referred through their church network, Todd and Eliza found HOPE’s mission aligned perfectly with their needs. With HOPE’s co-investment, they secured a home close to work, spacious enough for their growing family of five now, and deeply embedded in their community.

“When we got the approval call, I burst into tears,” Eliza shares. “We finally saw a future we could truly build on.”

The Impact: Stability, Community and Renewal

Owning their home has profoundly impacted their family life and community involvement. Their new home space now hosts church gatherings, youth groups, and community meetings, becoming a genuine hub for connection and support.

“Previously, we couldn’t comfortably host even a small group for dinner,” Todd says. “Now we can open our home widely, truly living out our mission.”

With the newfound financial stability, Eliza is able to focus on her work and family. “Knowing we have long-term security lifts an immense weight off my shoulders,” she says. “I’m more focused at work, knowing my family is stable and secure.”

The Broader Picture: Stability as a Community Catalyst

Eliza and Todd’s story highlights the powerful impact of HOPE Housing’s mission. By empowering essential workers with stable homes, HOPE strengthens entire communities.

“This isn’t just about owning a home,” Todd reflects. “It’s about using this stability to positively impact others, creating lasting change in a community we deeply care about.”

HOPE Housing’s Shared Equity Program ensures essential workers like Eliza and Todd can continue their vital roles without housing insecurity. Their story demonstrates the profound difference a secure home can make, benefiting families and uplifting entire communities.
